Saluki: healthy weight & calories

A healthy adult Saluki usually weighs 16 to 30 kg (35.3 to 66.1 lb). That is a wide range because frame size varies a lot even within one breed, so how they feel under your hands matters more than the number alone.

This is the show-ring ideal the AKC Official Standard of the Saluki describes, not a pet health target, a dog can be a very healthy weight without matching it exactly. It's useful context for how the breed is meant to be built, which is why the healthy weight range above is a separate, wider figure.
| Height, male | 23–28 in (58.4–71.1 cm) |
Given as an average for dogs, not a strict range; bitches are described only as "considerably smaller," with no figure given.
The standard doesn't give a weight figure.

Estimated for a Saluki at 23 kg, a healthy weight in the middle of the breed range. Resting energy is 70 × weight0.75 kcal; the multiplier below scales it up for how much they move and whether they are desexed.
| Activity | Desexed | Entire |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly restsa few short potty walks | 882 kcal | 1,029 kcal |
| Short daily walks20 to 30 minutes total | 1,029 kcal | 1,176 kcal |
| Active most days45 to 60 minutes, some play | 1,176 kcal | 1,323 kcal |
| Very activeruns, hikes or dog sport | 1,323 kcal | 1,470 kcal |
Puppies get roughly twice their resting energy while growing, about 1,470 kcal a day at this weight, but puppy needs change every few weeks so this is a starting point, not a fixed number. Seniors typically need about 10% less than an adult at the same activity level.
Faintly visible ribs and a deep tuck at the belly are normal for a Saluki, so "very tucked" can be their healthy shape. The goal is to keep that build, not to fill them out.
As a mid energy breed, a healthy adult Saluki typically does well with 30 to 45 minutes of purposeful exercise a day, walks plus some off-lead time, play or training, split across the day rather than one long session. Sighthound-type breeds benefit from a secure, enclosed space for a real sprint now and then, alongside their daily walks.
Puppies generally do well with several short, gentle sessions rather than one long walk, a rough guide some vets use is about 5 minutes of structured exercise per month of age, twice a day, alongside free play. Seniors usually benefit from shorter, more frequent walks instead of cutting exercise altogether, little and often keeps joints and muscle moving without overdoing it. For any age, a dog that lags behind, sits down mid-walk, or pants heavily well after stopping has had enough for that day.
We don't publish a month-by-month weight chart for Saluki puppies, and we'd be cautious of any site that does without citing a real source: growth varies enough between individual puppies that a generic curve can be misleading, and your vet can track your puppy against their own breed-appropriate growth chart at routine check-ups. Most puppies this size finish the bulk of their growth by around 12 months, give or take, though frame can keep filling out a little longer.
What's genuinely useful to track: steady, gradual weight gain (not sudden jumps or plateaus), ribs that stay easy to feel even as they fill out, and normal energy for their age. A puppy that seems unusually tired, isn't gaining at all, or is gaining very fast alongside a round, hard-to-feel-ribs shape is worth a vet visit rather than a wait-and-see.
Studies of dogs a similar size to a Saluki found overweight dogs had a shorter median life span than lean ones, by 0.4 to 0.9 years (Salt et al. 2019). That is an association from observational data, not a promise, but it is one of the largest studies of its kind.
Weight gain in dogs is rarely one big change, it's usually small things adding up: a slightly rounded scoop of kibble instead of a level one, a few extra treats, less exercise on busy weeks. Desexing also lowers resting energy needs by roughly 10 to 30%, which is why portions often need a deliberate cut around that time, not just a continuation of the puppy amount.
What actually helps: weigh food in grams rather than eyeballing a scoop, keep treats to under about 10% of daily calories, and re-weigh your dog every two weeks so drift gets caught early, while a small correction is still easy. For seniors, expect to feed roughly 10% less than an adult at the same activity level, and talk to your vet before any deliberate weight-loss plan, especially if the weight change wasn't from a diet change at all.
This page gives a breed-level estimate. For portions in grams, a calorie target adjusted for your dog's own age, activity and desexed status, and a 7-day activity plan, take the free 60-second check.

A healthy adult Saluki typically weighs 16 to 30 kg (35.3 to 66.1 lb). Frame size varies a lot within a breed, so body condition (can you feel the ribs?) matters more than the number on the scale.
How many calories does a Saluki need a day?
A desexed adult Saluki at a healthy weight typically needs roughly 1,029 kcal a day with short daily walks, more if they are very active or not desexed, less if they mostly rest. Use the calculator below for a number tailored to your dog.
How much food should a Saluki eat a day?
For a typical dry kibble (about 3.3 kcal per gram), that works out to roughly 312 g a day for a desexed adult with short daily walks. Food brands vary, so check the calorie content on your own bag, or enter it in the free check for an exact figure.
How much exercise does a Saluki need?
As a mid energy breed, a Saluki typically does well with 30 to 45 minutes of purposeful exercise a day, walks plus some off-lead time or play, adjusted for their age, health and the individual dog.
What is the typical lifespan of a Saluki?
Dogs around this size generally live 10 to 13 years, a general range for their size class rather than a breed-specific figure. Genetics, weight and overall health all affect where an individual dog falls in that range.
When does a Saluki stop growing?
Most Saluki puppies finish the bulk of their growth by around 12 months, though frame and muscle can keep filling out a little longer. Ask your vet to confirm against a proper growth chart for your individual puppy.
How do I know if my Saluki is overweight?
The same check vets use works for every breed: feel along the ribs (easy to feel with a thin cover is healthy, having to press firmly or not finding them at all means extra weight), and look for a waist from above. Try the free 2-question body condition check for an instant read.
Breed, age, activity, body shape, it takes about 60 seconds and the result is free.
